Drawing on the work of Doreen Massey, a leading thinker in human geography, we explore the idea that place is not static. It’s a dynamic, evolving intersection of stories, relationships, and experiences. Massey challenges us to see places not as fixed coordinates on a map, but as “processes” shaped by flows of people, ideas, and cultures. In this way, OICB itself is a living example of place-in-motion.
This term, our Year 9 Geography students begin with a unit on “Understanding Place”, inspired by the AQA A Level Geography syllabus. Through personal mapping, media analysis, and creative storytelling, students reflect on where they’ve come from and how those places have shaped their identities. They also begin to explore what it means to be an insider or outsider, and how we can foster a sense of belonging in a new environment.
At OICB, we believe that ambition, belonging, and curiosity are not just values. They are the foundations of place-making. Whether it’s through shared meals, collaborative learning, or quiet moments of reflection, each student contributes to the evolving story of our school.
So as we welcome new faces and reconnect with familiar ones, we invite everyone to consider: What does OICB mean to you? And how will you help shape this place we all share?
