If you've come across maths competitions - UKMT, Olympiads, the AMC, you might have wondered what they're really for. 

Do they actually make students "better at maths"? Or are they simply a niche pursuit for a particular kind of student? 

It's a fair question. And having watched students at OIC Brighton take these competitions on for the past three years, I can tell you the honest answer: yes… and no. 

As maths teachers, we sometimes see competition maths misunderstood. From the outside, it can look like an activity reserved for students who are already exceptionally strong mathematically. But that's not what I've seen play out in our classrooms. 

What Competition Maths Isn't 

Let's start by clearing something up. 

Competition maths is not the same as school maths. And it's certainly not a shortcut to top grades. 

In fact, many very successful A-level mathematicians find Olympiad-style problems surprisingly difficult at first. There are no standard methods to fall back on, no familiar templates. You're simply presented with a problem and asked to think. 

That can feel uncomfortable, particularly for students used to success coming from mastering techniques efficiently. So if your goal is purely examination performance, competition maths is not essential. 

What It Does Build 

Where competition maths becomes valuable is in the habits of mind it develops. 

Over the past three years, we've had a good number of students do very well in these competitions - and what strikes me every time is that their success has almost nothing to do with what they'd memorised. You simply cannot bank a set of solutions and expect them to carry you through an Olympiad paper. The students who do well are the ones who've fostered their own curiosity: turning a problem over, trying an approach that doesn't work, then trying another, exploring the same idea from three or four different angles until something gives. That habit of exploring rather than recalling is, in my experience, what actually breeds success in competition maths. 

Instead of applying rehearsed procedures, students learn to: 

  • Break unfamiliar problems into smaller parts 
  • Explore ideas that may not work 
  • Look for patterns and structures 
  • Persist through uncertainty 

And perhaps most importantly, they begin to understand something many students rarely experience in a normal classroom: 

Being stuck is not failure. In mathematics, being stuck is often where the real thinking begins. 

That's a difficult lesson to learn - but an important one. 

The Part Students Don't Always Expect 

Competition maths can be frustrating. You may spend half an hour on a problem and make absolutely no progress. You may eventually see the solution and think: I would never have thought of that. 

And yet, over time, something changes. Students begin to recognise patterns more quickly. They become more comfortable with uncertainty. They stop panicking when they don't immediately know what to do. 

That resilience matters far beyond mathematics itself - and it matters more, and sooner, than most students expect. 

Does It Matter Beyond School? 

No one is solving Olympiad geometry problems in most careers. You are unlikely to be asked to prove inequalities in a meeting. 

But here's something I've noticed that I didn't fully appreciate until I watched it happen twice: the line between preparing for a top university entrance exam and preparing for a maths competition is much thinner than people assume. Both come down to the same thing - flexibility of mind. Not rote memorisation, not rigid instruction, but hours spent wrestling with very difficult questions, often getting them wrong first, and learning exactly where the thinking traps are. 

Two of our founding Year 12 students, Danylo and Jeremy, understood this better than anyone. Both went on to sit some of the most demanding university entrance exams around. When they looked back, they were clear about what had actually prepared them: it was their time with UKMT and AMC competition problems, far more than any dedicated exam drilling, that taught them how to think their way through the kind of question they'd never seen before. That's exactly the muscle entrance exams are designed to test. 

Whether our students go on to study engineering, medicine, economics, computer science, or something else entirely, they will eventually meet problems where: 

  • There is no obvious method 
  • The answer isn't immediately visible 
  • They must think independently, under pressure 

That is why I believe competition maths has genuine value. It creates an environment where students practise intellectual independence in a very pure form - and, as Danylo and Jeremy found, it turns out to be some of the best preparation there is for what comes next. 

It's Not Just for the "Best" Students 

Another misconception is that competitions only matter for elite mathematicians. 

In reality, many students benefit from simply attempting these problems. Not because of the scores, but because the experience changes their relationship with difficulty. 

For some, it's the first-time maths feels creative rather than procedural. For others, it builds confidence in tackling unfamiliar ideas. And for many, it teaches patience - something increasingly rare in a world that expects immediate answers. 

So… Does Competition Maths Matter? 

That depends on what we mean by "matter". 

If the question is: 

  • Will it guarantee top grades? Probably not. 
  • Will universities require it? Usually not. 

But if the question is: 

  • Will it develop more confident problem-solvers? 
  • Will it encourage intellectual resilience?
  • Will it stretch students beyond memorising methods? 

Then yes, having watched it unfold over the past three years, I think it matters a great deal. 

Perhaps the better question isn't "Does competition maths matter?" but rather: 

"What kind of thinker does it help students become?" 

Because ultimately, that is what education should be about; not simply knowing what to do when the method is familiar but learning how to think when it isn't.
