At OIC Brighton, we believe that exceptional outcomes begin with exceptional wellbeing.
While academic achievement is a key part of every student's journey, we know that young people thrive when they feel happy, supported, connected and valued. That is why wellbeing is not something we approach as an occasional initiative or a response to challenges. Instead, it sits at the heart of the student experience, influencing how we learn, live and grow together as a community.
On World Mental Health Day, we are celebrating the importance of creating an environment where every student can flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

World Mental Health Day: Putting wellbeing at the heart of the student experience

Wellbeing Is everyone's responsibility
Life as a student can be exciting, rewarding and full of opportunity, but it can also bring pressures and challenges. Navigating academic expectations, friendships, future aspirations and life away from home requires resilience, self-awareness and support. At OIC Brighton, we recognise that wellbeing is a shared responsibility. Whether it is a member of the pastoral team checking in with a student, friends supporting one another, or staff creating opportunities for students to recharge and reflect, we are committed to fostering a culture of care where everyone looks out for each other.
Because when students feel a genuine sense of belonging, they are more confident, engaged and able to achieve their full potential.
Our ROCKS approach to wellbeing
Our wellbeing programme is built around the ROCKS framework, a simple but powerful approach that helps students develop positive habits for life.Relate
We build strong friendships and meaningful connections that help every student feel they belong.
Observe
We take time to slow down, reflect and appreciate the world around us, promoting mindfulness and self-awareness.
Care
We look out for one another, show kindness and make a positive difference within our community.
Keep Learning
We stay curious, embrace challenges and continue discovering new strengths and opportunities for growth.
Stay Active
We recognise the importance of movement, sport and healthy habits in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.Together, these principles underpin daily life at OIC Brighton, helping students develop the confidence, resilience and emotional intelligence they need to thrive.
Wellbeing through everyday experiences
Wellbeing does not happen in isolation. It is built through the experiences, routines and opportunities that become part of everyday life.Throughout the year, students participate in Wellbeing Wednesday activities designed to encourage balance, creativity and reflection. These sessions provide opportunities to step away from academic pressures, try something new and focus on personal wellbeing.
Activities such as yoga, mindful stitching, creative projects and reflective exercises give students valuable moments to pause, recharge and reconnect with themselves and others.
These experiences remind students that wellbeing is not just about managing challenges. It is also about making space for joy, creativity, relaxation and personal growth.
The importance of staying active
Physical activity plays an important role in maintaining positive mental health, which is why sport forms an integral part of life at OIC Brighton.Whether competing as part of a team, enjoying recreational activities with friends, taking part in fitness sessions or simply spending time outdoors, students are encouraged to stay active in ways that suit their interests and abilities.
Regular physical activity can help reduce stress, improve concentration, boost confidence and strengthen social connections. Just as importantly, it provides opportunities for students to have fun, celebrate successes and develop a healthy balance between academic commitments and personal wellbeing.
Pastoral care that puts students first
A strong pastoral system is one of the cornerstones of wellbeing at OIC Brighton. Our dedicated pastoral team works closely with students throughout their time at the College, ensuring they feel supported, heard and understood. Through daily interactions, regular check-ins and personalised guidance, students know there is always someone they can turn to when they need advice, reassurance or simply a listening ear.
This proactive approach helps students navigate challenges, build resilience and develop the confidence to seek help when they need it.
It also reinforces an important message: no one should ever feel they have to face difficulties alone.
A community built on kindness
One of the greatest strengths of OIC Brighton is the sense of community that exists across the College. In an international environment where students come together from diverse cultures and backgrounds, kindness, empathy and mutual respect are essential. Students learn the value of supporting each other, celebrating one another's successes and offering encouragement during difficult moments.
Often, the smallest actions can have the greatest impact: checking in on a friend, offering support before an exam, inviting someone to join an activity or simply listening.
These everyday acts of kindness help create a culture where wellbeing is everyone's responsibility and where every student feels valued.
More than a day
World Mental Health Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness and encourage conversations, but our commitment to wellbeing extends far beyond a single day in the calendar.Through our ROCKS framework, dedicated pastoral support, wellbeing activities, mindfulness opportunities, sport and a culture of compassion, we strive to ensure that every student feels empowered to achieve their best while maintaining a healthy balance in their lives.
Because wellbeing is not separate from education.
It is the foundation that enables students to learn with confidence, pursue their ambitions with purpose and become resilient, compassionate young people ready to make their mark on the world.
At OIC Brighton, we believe that when we prioritise wellbeing, everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
