Beyond the Grades: Understanding how we support every student to succeed at OIC Brighton

In our recent parent webinar, Understanding Your Child's Progress: Learning, Assessment and Success, Director of Academics Christine Yabsley-Gavin and Head of Teaching and Learning Adrian Price shared how OIC Brighton monitors, supports and celebrates student progress.
The key message was simple: progress is about far more than grades.
Looking beyond the report card
When parents think about progress, it is natural to focus on assessment results and grades. However, at OIC Brighton, we take a much more holistic approach.
Academic attainment is certainly important. Many of our students aspire to ambitious university destinations, including institutions such as UCL, King's College London, Edinburgh, Warwick, Imperial College London, Oxford and Cambridge, as well as leading international universities. Achieving those goals requires exceptional academic performance.
But success is built on more than examination outcomes alone.
We also look closely at:
- Study habits and independent learning skills
- Classroom engagement and participation
- Skill development and critical thinking
- Personal growth and wellbeing
- Confidence, resilience and self-awareness
These factors often influence one another. A student who develops stronger study habits may become more confident. Greater confidence can lead to increased classroom participation. Increased participation then supports stronger academic outcomes.
This interconnected approach allows us to see the whole child, not just a set of grades.
The power of being known
One of the defining features of OIC Brighton is our commitment to ensuring that every student is known and seen.
With small class sizes, specialist subject teachers and dedicated pastoral support, students benefit from highly personalised attention. Teachers gain a deep understanding of how individual students learn, what motivates them and where additional support or challenge may be required.
Rather than comparing students against one another, we focus on understanding each student's own journey and helping them reach their personal potential.
This reflects our core values of Ambition, Belonging and Curiosity, which underpin everything we do.
Assessment as a tool for growth
Assessment plays an important role in measuring progress, but it should never be viewed as an end in itself.
At OIC Brighton, students complete regular Standard Cumulative Interval Tests (SCITs), designed to check knowledge and understanding over time. GCSE students typically complete these on a three-week cycle, while A Level students work on a two-week cycle.
These assessments serve multiple purposes:
- Identifying strengths and areas for development
- Guiding future revision and study strategies
- Informing teaching approaches
- Supporting personalised interventions
- Tracking progress over time
Most importantly, assessment provides information.
As Adrian Price explained during the webinar, one assessment result is simply one data point. It does not define a student's ability, future outcomes or long-term potential.
Instead, each result helps us answer important questions:
- What is working well?
- Where are the challenges?
- What support is needed next?
- How can teaching be adapted to maximise progress?
This growth-focused mindset helps students view assessment as part of the learning process rather than something to be feared.
Turning setbacks into opportunities
Every student experiences challenges at some point in their academic journey.
Perhaps a test result falls below expectations. Maybe a topic proves more difficult than anticipated. These moments can feel disappointing, particularly for high-achieving students.
At OIC Brighton, we work closely with students to help them respond constructively to setbacks.
Rather than focusing solely on the outcome, we encourage students to reflect on the causes:
- Was revision balanced across all subjects?
- Were study techniques effective?
- Was enough time allocated?
- Are there gaps in understanding that can now be addressed?
Adrian highlighted a powerful concept explored during student workshops: "failing well."
The idea is not to celebrate failure, but to learn from it. Students are encouraged to reframe setbacks as opportunities for growth, helping them build resilience, adaptability and perseverance.
These are qualities that will serve them throughout their education and future careers.
Personalised support every step of the way
No two students need exactly the same support.
When assessment data is reviewed, teachers and Heads of Department work together to identify appropriate next steps for each individual.
For some students, this may involve a small adjustment to study habits or revision techniques. For others, more structured interventions may be beneficial, such as:
Additional subject support
- One-to-one guidance
- Personalised action plans
- Regular progress reviews
- Enhanced academic mentoring
Importantly, support is never static.
Strategies are reviewed regularly and adapted as students develop, ensuring that the level of challenge and support remains appropriate throughout their journey.
The important role of strategy tutors
A key part of our support structure is the Strategy Tutor system.
Every student is assigned a Strategy Tutor who meets with them regularly to discuss academic progress, wellbeing and personal development.
These conversations help students:
- Reflect on their performance
- Set meaningful goals
- Develop effective study habits
- Build self-awareness
- Take ownership of their learning
By helping students understand both their strengths and areas for improvement, Strategy Tutors encourage the independence and accountability that are essential for long-term success.
A partnership with parents
Student success is strongest when school and home work together.
We know that parents want to stay informed and involved in their child's progress, particularly when boarding or studying away from home.
That is why we provide multiple opportunities for communication, including:
- Fortnightly updates from Strategy Tutors
- Academic reports throughout the year
- Parent consultation opportunities
- Teacher feedback and comments
- Access to progress information through our parent portal
- Regular school communications and updates
Our aim is to ensure parents have a clear understanding not only of how their child is performing, but also of the support, strategies and next steps in place to help them succeed.
High Support. High Challenge. High Ambition.
Ultimately, our philosophy is built around a simple principle: every student deserves both challenge and support.
We hold ambitious expectations because we believe in our students' potential. At the same time, we recognise that achieving ambitious goals requires personalised guidance, strong relationships and a caring community.
Assessment provides valuable insights. Data helps inform decisions. But it is the combination of expert teaching, pastoral care, strategic support and genuine partnership with parents that enables students to flourish.
Because at OIC Brighton, success is never defined by a single test result.
Success is the result of a journey, one in which every student is encouraged to be ambitious, supported to belong, and inspired to remain curious about what they can achieve next.
