Discovering Biology Through Practical Learning


At Oxford International College Brighton (OICB), we believe biology should be experienced, not simply learned from theory. Alongside strong academic foundations, students take part in a wide range of practical activities that bring scientific concepts to life. Through laboratory investigations, students learn how scientific knowledge is generated, tested and applied.
Biology is much more than the study of living things. It helps students understand themselves, the world around them and some of the biggest challenges facing society today. From human health and disease to climate change, biodiversity and food security, biology provides the knowledge and skills needed to make sense of an increasingly complex world.
While Biology remains an important subject for aspiring doctors, dentists and veterinary surgeons, it also opens doors to many other exciting careers. Today's biology students may go on to work in biotechnology, genetics, environmental science, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, conservation, public health and many other rapidly growing fields. Practical work at OIC Brighton aims to support students planning to enter these careers.
Bringing Biology to Life Through Practical Learning
Dissection practical work is very popular and includes dissecting the mammalian heart, the mammalian lungs, an insect, a fish, a sheep's head, mammalian eyes, bird wings, pigs' feet and more.
Microbiology practical work is also popular where students follow aseptic techniques to grow and cultivate non-pathogenic bacteria to allow investigation into microbial agents such as different antibiotics.
Genetics practical work is another popular activity where students have used gel electrophoresis to analyse DNA and recombinant DNA technology, where the green fluorescent protein gene has been successfully transferred by students into bacteria.
Ecological practical work takes place in our beautiful grounds and at the world-renowned Wakehurst Place in Sussex. It provides opportunities to study biodiversity and conservation beyond the classroom.
Practical work is a key part of the OIC Brighton Biology programme. Students develop confidence in observation, data analysis and scientific enquiry while gaining a deeper understanding of biological processes.
Biology also develops highly transferable skills. Students learn to analyse evidence, solve problems, think critically and communicate complex ideas clearly. These abilities are valued not only by universities but also by employers across a wide range of professions.
Enrichment Beyond the Classroom
Educational visits at OIC Brighton help students see biology in action. A strong biology education should also inspire curiosity beyond the classroom. Through super-curricular activities, students are encouraged to explore scientific issues in greater depth and develop the intellectual curiosity that leading universities value.
Science Debating Club, for example, allows students to engage with contemporary topics such as genetic engineering, medical ethics and sustainability while developing the confidence to communicate and defend their ideas. It is also excellent preparation for university application interviews.
Students also benefit from talks and lectures delivered by researchers and academics, including attendance at public lectures at local universities, giving them insight into current scientific research and university-level study.
