How OIC Brighton and the Fusion Programme Helped Mara Earn a Scholarship to Rice University

For Mara, earning a scholarship to study Applied and Computational Mathematics at Rice University was not the result of a single achievement. It was the culmination of academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, dedicated mentoring, and a commitment to research that was nurtured throughout her time at Oxford International College Brighton. When preparing her university applications, Mara took a strategic approach. A passionate mathematician and accomplished chess player, Mara was able to draw connections between her interests and her academic ambitions. She explained how chess had helped develop the analytical thinking and problem-solving skills that ultimately led her towards mathematics and, later, an interest in cryptography. 

"Even though there's always something to do, I always find something new that I'd like to learn. Whether it's quantum cryptography or writing a research paper, I'm always looking for opportunities to go deeper into a subject." 

This intellectual curiosity became one of the defining characteristics of her application and helped demonstrate the qualities that leading US universities value in prospective students. A visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston also proved to be a defining point in her OIC Brighton journey, taking part in activities solving puzzles, analysing real-world data and developing analytical thinking. Mara credits much of her success to the support and encouragement she received from her teachers at OIC Brighton. 

Among those who had a significant impact was her Further Mathematics teacher, Aaron Eckhoff, who not only inspired her love of mathematics but also provided invaluable guidance throughout the university application process. From refining essays to offering mentorship, the support extended far beyond the classroom. 

Reflecting on her experience, Mara emphasised the culture of support that exists across the College:

While academic achievement formed a strong foundation, Mara believes the Fusion Programme played a crucial role in helping her stand out. 

The programme gives students the opportunity to undertake collaborative research projects, developing the analytical, investigative and teamwork skills expected at university level. Mara's project focused on Parkinson's disease research, where she worked alongside fellow students to investigate complex datasets and contribute to a wider research paper. 

The experience gave her practical exposure to research methodologies, data analysis and collaborative problem-solving. Students divided areas of research, conducted independent investigations and then brought their findings together to form evidence-based conclusions. The process mirrored the realities of academic research and challenged participants to think critically and communicate effectively. 

For Mara, the experience was transformative. 

"The Fusion Project made a huge difference. It taught me how to collaborate, analyse complex data and approach research in a structured way, all of which were invaluable during my university applications." 

She believes the research experience was particularly valuable during her Rice University application, as the institution actively seeks students who have already demonstrated a capacity for analytical thinking and research. The project allowed her to showcase those skills with real-world examples. 

Preparing for a Future in Cryptography 

Mara will begin her studies in Applied and Computational Mathematics with ambitions of pursuing a future career in cryptography. She was drawn to the subject by its combination of mathematics, computing and real-world impact. 

Throughout her time at OIC Brighton, she gradually developed a deeper appreciation for the breadth of mathematical applications, inspired by classroom discussions across mathematics, physics and computer science. Rather than a single defining moment, it was the cumulative effect of engaging lessons, challenging concepts and opportunities to explore ideas beyond the curriculum that helped shape her direction. 

"I want to work in cryptography because I'm fascinated by the way mathematics and technology come together to solve real-world problems."

Looking back, Mara's advice to aspiring students is simple: find what makes you unique and pursue it with genuine passion. 

"You should find something you're really good at and show universities what makes you unique. Make it clear why you're passionate about it and why it matters."
