Learning Beyond the Classroom by the Sea

What better way to spend Bank Holiday Monday than by heading to the coast?

Our students enjoyed an actionpacked day at Hove Lagoon Watersports, embracing challenge, teamwork and plenty of fresh sea air. Set just moments from the seafront, Hove Lagoon provides a safe, sheltered environment for young people to experience a wide range of waterbased activities.

Stepping Outside Comfort Zones

Throughout the day, students took part in:

    • Standup paddleboarding
      • Waterpolo

      • Kayaking

      • Raft building and racing

    • Landbased team challenges

Whether balancing on a paddleboard for the first time or working together to design a raft that would float, every activity encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones and discover new strengths.

The Power of Outdoor Education

The outdoor environment allows students and staff to see one another in a different light — building positive relationships, improving selfawareness and strengthening collaborationWe saw this firsthand throughout the day.

Landbased challenges added further energy and excitement, encouraging resilience, communication and problemsolving in a supportive, teamfocused setting. There was cheering from the shoreline, creative raft designs, and plenty of determination as teams worked together to overcome challenges.

Confidence in Action

Experiences like this are a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom.

Outdoor education can motivate young people to become successful learners while helping them develop as confident, responsible individuals. By navigating new environments and collaborating under pressure, students strengthen skills that transfer directly back into their academic work — perseverance, leadership and adaptability.

For many, the day was about more than watersports. It was about:

    • Building independence
      • Strengthening friendships

      • Developing trust

    • Discovering personal resilience

Memories That Last

There were smiles, splashes and plenty of laughter throughout the day — but also quieter moments of pride when a new skill was mastered or a challenge overcome.

A huge thank you to our staff and the fantastic instructors at Hove Lagoon for making it such a memorable experience for everyone involved.

At our college, we believe education should be dynamic, purposeful and enriching. Days like this show how powerful learning can be when it extends beyond four walls — into fresh air, shared challenge and realworld experience.
