Students in Year 9 recently attended the Southern Schools Book Award (SSBA). This initiative celebrates outstanding contemporary literature and provides students with the opportunity to engage with authors, take part in discussions, and share their enthusiasm for reading with pupils from other schools. This year, the book How To Survive A Horror Movie by Scarlett Dunmore won the award – you can see the excellent drawing that was projected above the heads of the crowd in the picture below. Chris Riddell, outstanding children’s illustrator, was live-sketching during the awards evening, providing entertainment and visual commentary on the proceedings.
Students enjoyed the speeches and refreshments afterwards, then were able to choose a book from The Book Nook, a children’s bookseller based in Brighton. These were then signed by the authors! All in all, the evening was a chance to celebrate reading, in an age where there is more competition for our attention than ever before.
We’re looking forward to following up with students on how they’re getting on with their own signed copies of the author’s works!
