Brighton and Hove Youth Council Opportunities for Students

Brighton and Hove Youth Council | OIC Brighton - Brighton and Hove Youth Council

About the Youth Council

The Youth Council brings young people together to influence local issues and create positive change. It’s open to ages 13–19, or up to 25 for young people with additional needs. Up to 60 members represent the city through schools, colleges, youth groups and specialist organisations.

Why it matters

Young people have the right to be heard:

  • Human Rights Act 1998, Article 10: freedom of expression
  • UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 12: the right for views to be listened to

The Youth Council ensures these rights are upheld locally.

What’s involved

Members attend:

  • One Youth Council session per month (90 mins)
  • One campaign/action meeting per month (90 mins)
  • Sessions held in central Brighton
  • Bus travel and refreshments provided

Weekly activities and campaigns run throughout the year. Members can join as much as they wish, with support to manage time and avoid overload.
