Conservation and connection in Nepal

Conservation and connection in Nepal | OIC Brighton - Conservation and connection in Nepal

This summer, our students took part in an extraordinary journey to Nepal—an experience that blended medicine, conservation, cultural discovery and adventure. More than just a trip, it was a living example of the values we hold dear at OICB: Ambition, Belonging and Curiosity.

Aiming Higher in Healthcare

For four of our students, the focus was medical outreach in Bharatpur. Guided by their ambition to understand global healthcare, they visited local hospitals, homeopathic centres, and the renowned Chitwan Medical College, which provides both private healthcare and tuition. These visits offered first-hand insight into how medicine is taught and practiced in different contexts.

Evenings were filled with seminars on topics such as Tropical Diseases, giving students the chance to deepen their knowledge. One highlight was presenting a hand-washing tutorial to local primary school children—an inspiring moment of belonging, where our students shared skills across cultures and built connections through service.

The weekend brought adventure in Chitwan National Park, where students went on safari, explored museums, and even met elephants—reminders that learning often happens best outside the classroom.

Protecting Nature Through Conservation

While some explored healthcare, Anna immersed herself in a conservation programme within Chitwan National Park. Each day brought opportunities for curiosity inaction: surveying birds and mammals, planting trees to restore habitats, and learning how communities and wildlife coexist.

Evenings were a time of cultural belonging, as Anna and her group joined the indigenous Tharu people for traditional dance lessons. The weekend trek to a local temple combined both challenge and reflection, showing how ambition and resilience extend beyond academic pursuits.

Living Our Values Through Extraordinary Experiences

Whether in a bustling hospital or a quiet forest clearing, our students experienced first-hand the ambition to learn beyond boundaries, the curiosity to explore the unknown, and the sense of belonging that comes from connecting with new communities.

At OICB, we are proud to offer opportunities like this—extraordinary and unique experiences that open minds, broaden horizons, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Hear from Anna, Year 13 student, who talks about her experience on the trip:

“My favourite part of the Conservation program was getting to participate in the work of the Chitwan National Park. Not only was I able to see a variety of wild animals up close and the fascinating sceneries of rural Chitwan, I also got a taste of what it's like to work in conservation from the local Nepali staff, who very incredibly friendly and always eager to answer all my questions. Towards the end of the trip there was also a lot of sightseeing, which made me feel like I've truly explored the Nepali cities Chitwan and Kathmandu”.
