Our Year 13 Biology students, many of whom are preparing for careers in medicine and healthcare, had a fantastic opportunity this week to attend a lecture by Professor Malcolm Johnston from Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
The talk focused on radiology, the use of medical imaging such as ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI scans to diagnose and guide treatment. Professor Johnston explained how imaging is now at the heart of modern healthcare, helping doctors make faster and more accurate decisions for patients. It plays a vital role in everything from cancer care to emergency surgery and is central to the NHS’s vision for better, more efficient care.
Students were fascinated to learn how radiology has evolved from simple X-rays to today’s advanced techniques, and why it is such an exciting and growing area of medicine. Professor Johnston also shared his own career journey from medical training to becoming a professor and encouraged students to stay open to unexpected opportunities along the way.
Marie K (Year 13) said:
"It was an amazing event to attend since I had many misconceptions about radiology, and seeing what being a radiologist actually is made me consider this field as a potential career pathway. This specialty is frequently left behind the scenes since patients rarely have much contact with radiologists and realising how much it advanced over the last 70 years was a great mind broadening experience."
This was an inspiring experience for our students, giving them a glimpse into the future of healthcare and the importance of innovation in improving patient care.
Opportunities like this are invaluable for students considering medical or healthcare careers. They:
