The power of purpose: why motivation matters in school

At OIC Brighton, we know that motivated students are much more likely to fulfil their ambitions. They’re also more confident and engaged in their education.

So, what is it that motivates our young people to learn? And how does our unique educational approach inspire each student to fulfil their personal and academic ambitions?

In this article, we discuss the importance of motivation in education – and explain how we drive our community to excel.

What is motivation?

Motivation is what makes us do something. It’s the driving force behind our actions; the energy and enthusiasm that keep us going, even when the going gets tough.  In education, motivation powers a student’s drive to learn and achieve success – it’s the spark that fires their growth mindset. Examples include a learner who chooses to take an Extended Project Qualification in addition to their A-level subjects – or a young person who goes the extra mile to set-up a student-led extra-curricular club. In short, motivation is what inspires our community to act in a way that gets them closer to their academic and personal goals.

Why is motivation so important?

Motivation plays a pivotal role in the learning process.

Motivated students are more focused on their goals. They’re determined, they take the initiative, and they care about their work. They’re also less bothered by distractions and can concentrate for longer periods of time.

Motivated students:

  • Are increasingly persistent and resilient.

  • Feel more confident in themselves and their abilities.

  • Love going to class every day.

  • Find learning more enjoyable.

  • Are more likely to take on new challenges.

In contrast, a lack of motivation can hinder academic progress and personal growth. It can show itself through feelings of frustration and annoyance, hinder productivity, and have a negative impact on wellbeing.

The factors that influence student motivation

Everyone is different, and what motivates one student can markedly differ to what inspires their friends.

But what do these motivating factors look like? We’ve listed five of the most common below.

Intrinsic motivation: This comes from within, driven by personal interest, curiosity, and the desire to learn or master a subject. Students who are intrinsically motivated often find joy in the learning process itself.

Extrinsic motivation: This is influenced by external factors, such as grades, rewards, praise, or the desire to avoid negative consequences. Extrinsic motivators can be effective but might not sustain long-term engagement.

Goal orientation: Every student has different learning goals, whether it’s a desire for self-improvement or a determination to be the best at something. These goals – and the journey to achieving them – can significantly impact how motivated a student feels.

Social environment: Supportive relationships with peers, teachers, and family can really enhance motivation. Collaborative learning environments often encourage students to be more engaged, too.

Relevance and autonomy: When students see the relevance of what they’re learning, particularly to their lives or future goals, they’re more likely to feel motivated. Offering choice and personalisation also enhances their sense of autonomy and motivation.

How we motivate our students

Our goal is to help our students to reach their full potential – and get into the university of their dreams. But how do we achieve this in practice?

By creating personalised pathways to success

At our first meeting with a student, we identify their goals and motivations. We then map out a tailored journey that aligns with their strengths and interests. This personalised Global Strategic Pathway features three pillars: academic excellence, personal growth, and career preparation. It’s designed to instil a growth mindset, unlock each student’s full potential, and help them realise their ambitions.

Through choice and excellence in the curriculum

The academic element of each student’s Global Strategic Pathway is underpinned by the English National Curriculum. An extensive choice of GCSE and A-level subjects enable our young people to create their own academic journey, which is delivered by outstanding subject specialists. Learning alongside like-minded students in dynamic classes, our students are challenged to be their best.

By prioritising personal growth

We support our young people to develop the characteristics, values, and mindset they need to flourish. Challenges on our award-winning Global Campus platform nurture critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy skills, while our comprehensive wellbeing approach builds resilience, confidence, and adaptability. Every student benefits from one-to-one mentoring from their very own Strategy Tutor, too. This keeps them motivated and ensures they’re learning in a way that works for them.

Through a ground-breaking supercurricular programme

Our innovative supercurricular programme ensures our students are engaged beyond the curriculum. Through six strands – which include programmes, awards, and competitions; clubs and societies; and further personal development – our young people create a portfolio of relevant experiences, qualifications, and awards that help them to stand out from the crowd. Our programme also ensures they’re continually progressing towards their goals.

By fostering an inspirational environment

We’re a truly international college that’s home to some of the brightest young minds in the world. In our classrooms and corridors, students bond over shared passions and goals, and create connections that last a lifetime. They also challenge and inspire one another, ensuring everyone is motivated to achieve great things.

Motivation fuels success – and creates bright futures

We know that motivation is so much more than setting coursework deadlines or using exams to encourage students to work hard.

Instead, it’s about developing our students’ intrinsic motivation to learn, ensuring they’re working towards their goals, and providing personalised inspiration, support, and challenge.

Doing this drives our learners to excel. It also ensures they go on to fulfil their university and career ambitions.
