OIC Brighton’s first ever Sports Day was successfully held on the 20th of June 2025, with exceptional performances from both students and teachers. The event brought together the whole school for a day filled with excitement, competition, and school spirit.
Sports Day kicked off with a 100-metre sprint between the animal mascots of OIC Brighton's houses, with students dressed in mascot costumes to start the day of friendly competition. The event went on to showcase a variety of exciting activities, including track and field events, and inter-house relays. The staff relay was a real crowd pleaser amongst student on lookers, with the crowd cheering to support their favourite teachers. Students and teachers alike participated in a whole school sprint around the track, another favourite event.
During the day, Principal Tess described how “I like seeing people have fun and develop house spirit during Sports Day at OIC Brighton”. Greg, Maths teacher, described the day as “hot, damn hot!”, quoting Robin Williams from Good Morning, Vietnam.
However, the day was much more than just sports, with teachers playing live music and accepting student song requests. Tejas, Former Computer Science Teacher, was especially popular for carting his bongos all the way to the sports field. He claimed that he had “just got it yesterday” as a “long-term investment”, and just in time for sports day.
The day of sports events was a testament to the students' sporting dedication. After months of training, students could showcase their hard work and talent in front of the entire school. Spirits were high even during tense competitions. The 100 metre race was especially thrilling, as students raced down the track at rapid speeds to cross the finish line. Former Head boy Osman, who won the race, described how “It’s all about training and mentality. Our mentality limits our physical capacity.”
After the events were finished, students and teachers travelled back to school, where well-earned refreshments were waiting, including ice cream - a welcome distraction for Year 12s who were awaiting their predicted grades!
Overall, the day was full of excitement and house unity for students and teachers at OIC Brighton. Everyone was left feeling excited about next year’s Sports Day - is it too early to start training already?
